The ReFA Questionnaire
The Refined Food Addiction Questionnaire is under development by the Foundation. It is based on the diagnostic criteria that the American Psychiatric Association has developed for addictions or substance dependence. It is composed of seven questions and food choices and it can be taken like a survey.
The Foundation has validated the ReFA Questionnaire in several pilot studies. One of the goals of the Foundation is to further validate the scale with larger, specialized populations.
When thoroughly validated, the ReFA Questionnaire will allow health professionals to identify people who might benefit from a food plan composed of unrefined foods as a means to regain control of their food choices.
The Questionnaire will also allow researchers to assess study participants for the possible presence of the disease. This will facilitate development of knowledge about conditions that may co-occur with refined food addiction.
The ReFA Questionnaire will also permit studies of the prevelence of ReFA in the general population. The short format of the Questionnaire makes it adaptable to large populations studies.
