Consequences
The Foundation is conducting research in pilot studies into three areas of consequences. The first is into the relationship between refined food addiction and the major diet-related epidemics of our times: obesity, diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease. The hypothesis is that the addiction framework may help explain why people with these conditions continue to eat foods that are not compliant with dietary treatment plans.
The Foundation is also conducting pilot studies to develop new knowledge about the possibility that mood disorders may be tied to refined food addiction, just as they are in addictions to other drugs of abuse. Depression, irritability, anxiety, and shame are fields of inquiry.
The Foundation is pursuing other possible consequences of refined food use including fatigue, joint pain, learning disorders, memory loss, and consequences of pregnancy. These conditions are of particular interest for two key populations: the aging and children.
