Combining

Within the field of substance abuse, the sub-field of polysubstance abuse has received increasing attention.   The Foundation’s pilot studies indicate similar polysubstance abuse may be present in the field of food addiction.

The Foundation’s pilot study found that combinations of ingredients are used in addictive eating more frequently than single ingredients.  For example, black coffee is not abuse, but coffee with sugar and/or dairy is used in addictive eating.  Flour, as found in unsalted pretzels, is not used in addictive eating as often as salted pretzels.

The Foundation is committed to further exploring the role of combining refined ingredients in creating the loss of control in addictive eating.
